The Government’s pledge to create three million new apprenticeships by 2020 is likely to have the effect of forcing colleges to rethink and revamp their entire apprenticeship strategy. Relying on existing contacts with employers, or contacting employers at random is unlikely to work effectively. What is needed is a new approach, one that is methodical, one which is highly targeted, and one which begins by asking the following questions:
1. Which industries should we target?
2. What are their skills needs?
3. Who are the employers?
We believe these questions can all be answered by using good Labour Market Information (LMI), and so with this in mind we have put together a short report detailing why colleges need to take a new approach, along with a step-by-step guide on how they can use LMI to achieve it.
