The role of the West of England Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) is to work with businesses and local councils to support economic growth, and attract new jobs and investment to Bristol, Bath, Weston-Super-Mare and the surrounding countryside. In broad terms, their vision includes:
- Supporting growth
- Driving innovation
- Developing people
- Promoting business
- Creating a sense of place
Using Data to Build a Better Economy
One of the fundamental beliefs at the LEP is that in order to achieve their goals, decisions relating to the local economy should be based on the best available data and evidence. It was for this reason that they took the decision back in 2012 to invest in EMSI’s online Labour Market Information tool, Analyst.
Analyst offers the LEP a wealth of economic data about their geographical area, right down to 4-digit industry and occupation levels – and all at the touch of a button. This data helps them better understand the changing profile of the workforce in their area – information that is crucial in getting to grips with the dynamics of the local labour market and so better placing them to achieve their goals of improving the economy.
“Our aim is to build upon the existing strengths in the West of England economic area to make the area an even more dynamic place to invest, to start a business and to work. We couldn’t undertake this task effectively without first understanding the economy. The comprehensive data in Analyst really helps us to do this.”
— Henry Lawes, Education Partnership Manager, West of England LEP
Using Data to Support and Inform Local People
However, West of England are not just using Analyst’s data to keep themselves informed of what is going on in their labour market; they are now taking the data a step further by using it to inform local people about what is happening in the labour market.
The result is a series of 12 innovative and striking reports entitled “Employment in the West of England”, each of which focuses on a different sector: Advanced engineering and aerospace; Construction; Creative and Digital; Distribution; Food tech; Health & Life Sciences; Hi tech; Low carbon; Professional services; Retail; Visitor economy; and a General overview.
The reports use data from Analyst, along with other data sources, to give information on things like general employment numbers, future industry growth and future occupational growth. The idea behind these reports is the belief that access to high quality Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) is key to ensuring that young people and adults across the West of England are able to make informed career choices. As Henry Lawes says:
“As part of our goal of developing people in our region, we want to give access to good information about what is really happening in the labour market so that local people can make better decisions about their future careers. These reports, with their focus on local data, are a key part of achieving this aim.”
EMSI is proud to be supporting West of England as they seek to build a better economy and support local people. You can take a look at their reports by going to www.westofenglandlep.co.uk/lmi.
