The following scenario may well have a familiar ring to it. A man buys himself an exercise bike in order to shed a few pounds and get a bit fitter. His intentions are good and he promises himself he’ll use it for 20 minutes per day. For the first week after the bike arrives he is as good as his intentions, enthusiastically going above and beyond the target he set himself. But slowly — almost imperceptibly at first — his resolve wears off and he begins to skip his go. At first it is just the odd day, but as the weeks go by the number of “skipped” days gradually begins to exceed the number of “bike” days until one day, having not used the machine for weeks, he finds himself staring over at the corner of his room, bemused to find that he seems to have purchased for himself a very expensive clothes horse.
The expensive clothes horse scenario is something we really want to avoid happening with EMSI tools! It is entirely possible to buy our tools with great intentions, only for the enthusiasm to wane until the point that the tool just sort of sits there, still with great potential, yet not really being used in anything like its full capacity. The proverbial white elephant.
