We wrote back in February about Chichester College’s major revamp of its careers provision — the creation of the Positive About Futures careers service — which included an investment into EMSI’s Career Coach. The revamp was a great success, with the college gaining a Matrix Award from quality assessment organisation, EMQC, with Career Coach being noted as “an extremely valuable addition by students, staff and managers alike”.
We are pleased to report that the college has now had even more success, with a recent Ofsted inspection rating the college as Outstanding — up from Good at the last inspection. Amongst the overall reasons for the Outstanding grade, the report praised the high standards of learning, inspirational teaching, outstanding success rates, and the unrelenting determination of staff to ensure learners achieve to their full potential.
One other area singled out as a reason why the college is Outstanding was its highly responsive curriculum. According to the report:
“The highly effective, responsive and wide-ranging curriculum fully meets the needs of employers, businesses and communities across the region. Partnership working is excellent.”
There are of course many components that have gone into producing such a positive and responsive curriculum, but one part of this has been the college’s investment into Analyst — our web-based tool which gives instant access to key local and regional data on occupations and skills. The report also noted that:
“Managers and staff have been highly successful in ensuring that the college curriculum meets local and national priorities. The college is a key provider of education and training in West Sussex, East Hampshire and beyond. The extensive range of work-based learning provision is responsive to, and reflective of, the needs of the local and regional business communities.”
In addition to a curriculum that is responsive to the needs of businesses, the Ofsted report also praised the college’s responsiveness to the careers needs of learners. In particular, the report singled out the role played by the Positive About Futures team, and their use of Career Coach in giving careers guidance to learners:
“Managers and staff provide extremely useful and pertinent information, advice and guidance to ensure learners make informed study and career choices. The ‘Positive about Futures’ team is particularly effective in providing detailed information on employability and labour market trends for managers and teachers to use to inform curriculum planning. Learners make very good use of an on-line resource that provides clear information about jobs and employment opportunities across the region.”
EMSI would like to congratulate Chichester College for their great achievement in becoming an Outstanding college for learners, businesses and to the local and regional community, and we are pleased to have been able to play some part in this success.
